Mental Health

Specialist Mental Health Work
How is your mental health?

Lead Mental Health Support Worker specialising in addictions and mental health with the military

My name is Jo and I have been working at the Vine Centre since 2020. My background is working alongside Social Services with Looked After Children. I worked for a number of years as a Key Worker for young children and also as a Contact Supervisor, it was during this role I gained my Level 3 Diploma in Children and Families Social Care. This job led me to working with Adults Mental Health.

Since working at the Vine Centre I have completed courses in Drug and Alcohol Addictions (Distinction), and Level 3 Diplomas in Mental Health and PTSD. My specialist area is working with members of the military, helping them deal with addictions, anger management and mental health.

Helping others is my passion, and I feel fortunate enough to be carving a career doing such a rewarding job. I have worked with people from all walks of life, helping them to work through difficult periods and move on to a more positive path.

My name is Alison and I have been working at the Vine Centre since 2014. My background is in sociology, psychology, mental health and health promotion. After graduating from university I spent 10 years working in mental health in the NHS before going into charity work.

I work with any client that has an issue with their mental health. This could be alongside multiple other issues such as addiction, anger management, learning difficulties, unemployment, housing, budgeting and life in general. I work with the person at their pace and my work ranges greatly dependent on the needs of the client at that time. It may be one week I help them complete a benefit form and the next week we focus on their anger and coping strategies they could use to help deal with this in a better way. Everyone is an individual and has very different needs. That means that I approach each case in the best way I can to help that person.

I feel very privileged to have worked with such amazing people some of who have had extremely difficult lives and issues do deal with. I feel honored that these people feel able to share their story with me and allow me to help them in any way I can. I have seen many people come to me with severe anger and alcohol issues and through their own hard work have been discharged with no alcohol issues and their anger under control. Others, who came not being able to leave the house have managed to go out on their own and start courses in further education. The list is endless but it is a great place to work and a great pleasure to help in any way I can.

Their story.... ‘This is my safe space, I know I can come in here and just be for a short while.’ ‘I am grateful, you know I am. If it wasn’t for you lot I don’t know where I would be.’ ‘You are always smiling, I like that, it’s nice to see.’ Positive Outcomes.... A man in his 20’s first visited, suffering with undiagnosed mental health disorder, addiction and self harm. He showed signs of alcohol induced psychosis and bounced from severe depression to manic behaviour. He also showed a lot of anger and aggression towards himself and others. Slowly but surely he started to open up, not really knowing who he was, he dived in and started to talk. At the first meeting he couldn’t properly describe how he felt, what was going on, or what he really wanted (if he wanted anything out of life at all.) 29 sessions and hours later he showed signs of positive change in many ways. Now focused about what he wants from the future and with goals he wants to meet. His alcohol use is massively reduced and mental health, significantly improved. He is now engaging in new interests and has a better relationship with friends and family. At our last meeting, he had not self harmed in 3 months. In 6 months, his self reported score of well- being nearly tripled. He has a bright future ahead.
