Mental Health

Specialist Mental Health Work
How is your mental health?

Who I am.

My name is Penny and I am the specialist mental health worker here at the Vine centre. My education is within psychology and counselling and I am a qualified counsellor. I have been working with vulnerable people for many years. Over those years, I have had the privilege to meet many brave people. We all have our own battles, but I am honoured to say that, I am able to be in a position to help those who need someone in their corner to help fight for them.

What I do.

Whether my clients have diagnosed mental health or not, I work with them to face it. That could mean understanding and coping with their mental health and day to day challenges; or sorting out the complexities of what may or may not be going on. I work with everyone in a person centred way. No two people ever have the same needs. I will work with my client to make sure whatever drops on their doormat each day, we deal with it together.

In recent years I have worked with clients on; substance abuse, exploring voices and psychosis, relationships, boundaries, advocacy with other professionals (a voice on behalf of my client, that understands them), coping, engagement with other services, self harm, confidence, domestic violence and the list goes on…..

My service is open ended and I believe that good mental health is about coping the best you can with what you have available to you. Some of us will always need to battle, but I will be there to pick my client up on the bad days, as well as celebrate their triumphs whatever that may be.

Why this can help.

When it becomes difficult to get dressed in the morning, remember who someone is, or know whether what you’re seeing is real or not, it can be difficult to face life alone. With our service at your side, you are not alone. I will work with my clients to find hope, to find a path through difficulties and hopefully work together, to cope with life in the wide world.

If you are worried about your mental health or are interested to hear more, please contact for more information.

Or please call us on 01252 400196 to talk to any of our staff who will be happy to help. Referral is by the individual or agency acting on their behalf. No referrals are accepted without the client’s knowledge.
Their story.... ‘This is my safe space, I know I can come in here and just be for a short while.’ ‘I am grateful, you know I am. If it wasn’t for you lot I don’t know where I would be.’ ‘You are always smiling, I like that, it’s nice to see.’ Positive Outcomes.... A man in his 20’s first visited, suffering with undiagnosed mental health disorder, addiction and self harm. He showed signs of alcohol induced psychosis and bounced from severe depression to manic behaviour. He also showed a lot of anger and aggression towards himself and others. Slowly but surely he started to open up, not really knowing who he was, he dived in and started to talk. At the first meeting he couldn’t properly describe how he felt, what was going on, or what he really wanted (if he wanted anything out of life at all.) 29 sessions and hours later he showed signs of positive change in many ways. Now focused about what he wants from the future and with goals he wants to meet. His alcohol use is massively reduced and mental health, significantly improved. He is now engaging in new interests and has a better relationship with friends and family. At our last meeting, he had not self harmed in 3 months. In 6 months, his self reported score of well- being nearly tripled. He has a bright future ahead.
